Smart Footwear: Podiatrist-Recommended Shoes For Supination

Posted by on Friday, March 7th, 2014

In a previous article, we discussed podiatrist-recommended shoes for pronation, a condition where the arches fall flat and the foot rolls inward as people walk. This week, we’d like to focus on the opposite effect: supination. Naturally, everybody has some degree of supination, where the foot rolls outwards, moving weight to the outside of the foot and raising the arch to propel the body forward.

Some people have what is called “oversupination” or “hypersupination,” which can predispose them to injuries like shin splints, plantar fasciitis, ankle sprains, and stress fractures. You can tell you’re a supinator if you have high arches, your running shoes wear out on the forefoot and outer sole, and if your wet footprints show a thin connection between heel and forefoot on the outside edge of the foot. Having the right shoes can help prevent a world of hurt from developing over time.

Oversupination is a common condition, but it should be well-managed to prevent the development of foot pain.

What Qualities Should a Supinator’s Shoe Have?

Ideally, a person suffering from oversupination will choose a shoe that has:

– A lot of cushioning and shock absorption

– A lightweight, flexible midsole

-Arch support

You’ll want to avoid athletic trainers with “motion control” or stabilizing features, medial support posts, and hard midsoles — all of which can make supination worse.

Men’s Fitness recommends the New Balance 1080V2, which offers a flexible, light sole and dual-density foam cushioning for $79.95.

The Nike website offers up models like the Nike Air Max, Nike Air Zoom Vomero, and Nike Air Pegasus as shoes for supinators.

The Asics Gel Cumulus 12 is another great option for people with high arches. Reviewers say it has the “same flexible ride and fit as those top stability shoes.” Other models like the Asics Gel Kinsei and Asics Gel Nimbus 12 are recommended by LiveStrong.

If you’re looking for shock absorption and superior cushioning (more so than a lightweight shoe), the Saucony Grid Cohesion NX is a popular shoe — particularly among female supinators.

Consider Custom Orthotics to Help with Supination

Custom orthotics molded to fit the shape of your foot can improve your natural alignment and absorb shock. A good pair will cost around $300, but your insurance provider will likely pick up most of that tab and they will last you many years with very minimal routine maintenance. These inserts will easily fit into many shoes you own for a more comfortable walk or run.

We can outfit you with custom orthotics here at The Center for Podiatric Care and Sports Medicine. Generally speaking, orthotics have helped patients with everything from plantar fasciitis and pronation to arthritis and supination, so we highly recommend them!
